Cutting-edge inspection transforms Beverston Engineering

For over half a century, Beverston Engineering has specialised in manufacturing precision machine parts for industries such as aerospace, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, and nuclear. To maintain its competitive edge, the company continually seeks innovation. In line with Industry 4.0 advancements, Beverston partnered with ViciVision UK to enhance its inspection processes, enabling instant part verification and reporting directly on the shop floor.

Beverston operates in highly competitive industries where precision and efficiency are crucial. Previously, parts were inspected in a separate quality control department using CMMs. This process caused delays, as CNC operators had to wait for quality approvals before continuing production. As a result, multiple faulty parts were sometimes produced before issues were detected, leading to lower productivity, increased scrap rates and higher costs. To resolve these challenges, Beverston sought an inspection system that would allow immediate part verification directly on the shop floor.

To modernise its workflow, Beverston Engineering invested in ViciVision optical measurement technology. The company first acquired a ViciVision M309, which quickly demonstrated improvements in efficiency and accuracy. Seeing its benefits, Beverston soon added a second machine, the ViciVision M614, to handle larger parts.

Rod Wah, managing director of Beverston Engineering, states: “The company has thrived because we constantly evolve and improve. This enables us to supply our customers with the right price, the right quality, and on-time delivery.”

The ViciVision machines, strategically placed next to CNC tools, allow operators to inspect parts at the press of a button. Visual indicators immediately confirm whether components meet tolerance requirements, enabling adjustments before defects multiply. This has significantly reduced waste and enhanced efficiency.

Improved productivity and quality assurance

ViciVision technology has streamlined Beverston’s production process, allowing operators to verify parts without relying on the quality control department. The result has been reduced scrap rates and higher production volumes without compromising quality.

Jay Wright, Precision Engineer at Beverston, says: “The cycle time is approximately 60 seconds. I can instantly check if a part is correct by glancing at the screen and histogram, eliminating the need to take components to the CMM room. This saves an immense amount of time over the year. For some components, it would be nearly impossible to measure all dimensions at the speed ViciVision allows. Without it, we couldn’t meet our current production levels. It’s fast, simple to use, and the best measuring device I’ve encountered in engineering.”

After an on-site demonstration, Beverston saw first hand how ViciVision technology could improve production. From installation to training and support, ViciVision UK has been a reliable partner.

Rod Wah remarks: “ViciVision UK has provided excellent service, installation and training. The machines are user-friendly, requiring minimal training – often just half a day to get operators up and running.”

A future-ready approach to manufacturing

The return on investment in ViciVision machines has been rapid.

“Within six months, we saw a full return on our investment,” reveals Rod Wah. “Our workforce is growing and our order book is the strongest it has ever been. I anticipate purchasing another ViciVision machine soon. I highly recommend ViciVision machines to any company. They are a true asset and deliver exactly as promised.”
