Exploring the Mitutoyo CV-2100 contour measuring system

Measurement & Manufacturing recently had the opportunity to explore the Mitutoyo CV-2100 Contour Measuring System, a high-precision instrument designed for fast, accurate and versatile profile measurement. As industries increasingly demand components with tight tolerances, tools like the CV-2100 are becoming essential for quality assurance, particularly in sectors such as automotive, aerospace, medical and precision plastics.

During the demonstration, it became immediately clear that the CV-2100 excels in the accurate measurement of complex shapes. The system is suitable for turned, ground or moulded parts, providing precise inspection of features such as chamfers, radii, grooves, angles and steps. Its compact design makes it well-suited to both production floors and quality control labs, without compromising on precision or capability.

One of the stand-out features of the CV-2100 is its measurement range and resolution. The X axis offers a 100 mm range, the Z1 axis (detector movement) provides 50 mm, and the Z2 axis (column travel) spans 350 mm. Both the X and Z1 axes have a resolution of 0.1 µm, enabling the system to detect even the finest profile details.

Regarding accuracy, the X axis is rated at ±(2.5 + 0.02L) µm and the Z1 axis at ±(2.5 + 0.1H) µm, where L and H represent the measurement length and height in millimetres. This level of precision ensures that every part is measured to exacting standards.

Speed and operational efficiency were also highlighted during our exploration. The X axis can traverse at up to 20 mm/s, while the stylus measurement speed ranges from 0.02 to 5 mm/sec. These features allow for rapid measurement cycles without sacrificing detail. Additionally, the CV-2100 offers an inclined surface measurement function, permitting the drive unit to tilt up to ±45°. This allows measurement of angled surfaces without adjusting the set up, simplifying inspections of complex components.

During hands-on demonstrations, the stylus lift function stood out as a particularly practical feature. By automatically raising the stylus between measurement points, it reduces the risk of collisions and enhances multi-point measurement efficiency. The system is paired with Mitutoyo’s FORMTRACEPAK software, which enables advanced contour analysis, surface roughness evaluation and automated inspection report generation. This integration ensures that engineers and quality inspectors can quickly interpret data and make informed decisions.

For more specialist applications, Mitutoyo offers the CV-2100M4 bundle. This comprehensive kit includes a cross-travel table, rotary vice and quick-release grip handle for rapid Z-axis traverse. Measurement & Manufacturing noted that this configuration is particularly suited for high-precision rotational parts, medical threads, bearings and plastic components such as PET necks, making it a versatile tool for production environments.

In conclusion, the Mitutoyo CV-2100 highlighted its combination of precision, flexibility and efficiency. By delivering fast, accurate and reliable measurements of complex profiles, it represents a significant asset for manufacturers striving for high quality and consistency. For quality engineers and production managers alike, the CV-2100 is a clear example of how advanced measurement technology can enhance both productivity and product integrity.
